Heroine of Covid-19 fight

According to Abuja-based Public Affairs Analyst, Musa Wada, “In Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), many analysts have come to mention the name of Dr. Jumai Ahmadu of the Covid-19 Situation Room as their heroine so far in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. She is the founder of the Helpline Foundation that has positively impacted the lives of many Abuja residents, especially at this time when the government needs partners in the fight against the Coronavirus pandemic.

“The pandemic is overwhelming and one of the excruciating part for people is the feeling of utter helplessness in the face of widespread sufferings and hardship. Certainly, staying at home and staying healthy are the most crucial ways to stave off this crisis by individuals.

“In this regard, the Helpline Foundation founded by Dr. Jumai Ahmadu has made a number of donations and contributions which have impacted the lives of many residents, especially at this time when the people are in dire need of help.

“Her Foundation has helped tremendously in serving at this critical time as the residents centre for Covid-19 philanthropy. Its resources help the people make intentional and informed decisions on the ongoing Covid-19 crisis. “Through this Foundation, she has helped to coordinate funds to create the Covid-19 response funds to support first responders, health workers and individuals that are being quarantined.

“Her Foundation has helped provide funds to first responders in need of protective equipment and giving financial assistance to vulnerable groups like widows, orphans and the disadvantaged in the society who have been worse hit by the Coronavirus pandemic.”

Wada in an article title: Jumai Ahmadu as Heroine of Covid-19 Fight, published in a national daily further stated that: “The Helpline Foundation has hired professionals and volunteers to cater to vulnerable communities around Abuja to alleviate the negative effect of Covid-19. They are also supplying these communities with protective equipment and replenishing medical supplies in critical hospitals around Abuja.

“The Foundation has been in the forefront in the collection and distribution of medical facilities needed in various rural and urban hospitals in Abuja in the current fight against Covid-19 crisis.

“The Foundation has also bolstered its quick response line which provides callers with vital information, resources, vital services and support to ward off the Coronavirus pandemic.”

Annual reach-out programme

In a bid to give hope and put smiles on the faces of the vulnerable the Foundation organises annual reach-out programme for vulnerable women across the FCT and neighbouring states of Nasarawa, Niger and Kogi.

As part of activities to mark its 20th anniversary and end of year reach-out for 2020 Helpline Foundation empowered over 500 vulnerable women.

The Foundation also distributes assorted food items and clothing to women and children in rural communities.

Speaking to journalists during the programme at Moshood Abiola Stadium, the President of the Foundation, Dr. Jumai Ahmadu, revealed that over 10,000 vulnerable women and children have benefited from the scheme since inception in 2003, while 3,000 children from less privileged homes are on the scholarship scheme of the foundation.

She also used the forum to state that besides the reach-out programme, the Foundation has redesigned its programmes to focus more on skill acquisition training and empowerment rather than distribution of food stuffs, stressing that the 20th anniversary was unique as over 100 women would be empowered to carry out various skills.

“We are here this morning to mark our 20th anniversary and at the same time have our usual annual reach-out programme for widows and orphans across the FCT and the neighbouring states of Nasarawa, Niger and Kogi.

“It has been our tradition for 20 years now to seize every opportunity and occasion to put smiles on the faces of the less privileged especially women.

“Today, we are training women on the art of gale making in different forms in view of the season and to distribute foods and clothing items to them, so that they too can join the privileged class to celebrate Christmas.

“It has been our philosophy and our slogan that “nobody is too poor to give and nothing is too small to give”. However, we at Helpline Foundation have decided to focus more on skill acquisition programmes and empowerment of the vulnerable as we can witness today,” she stressed.

The Founder commended the present administration for demonstrating commitment in ensuring that women are able to access available grants designed for women empowerment, adding that the FCT Gender Department under the Social Development Secretariat has lived up to its mandates.

In her words: “We have now gone beyond talk, and we are now doing what ought to be done for women. We in the FCT, the Gender Department under the Social Development Secretariat is always there for us. The government of the day is beginning to live up to its responsibility in terms of women empowerment.”

Also speaking, one of the beneficiaries, who is the Coordinator, Bwari Women, Mrs. Terdoo Ubah, commended the Foundation for its steadfastness in women empowerment, revealing that the revolving loan scheme launched by the foundation has empowerment over 200 widows in Bwari Area Council.

The highpoint was talks for women on how to start a business with zero capital; digital tools for growing a business online; how to tie gale; soap and disinfection production, as well as basic protection for the girl child.

It is imperative that Nigeria addresses the scourge of rape and gender-based violence with urgency and determination, towards this, an annual international campaign,16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, which kicked off on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, ended 10 December, Human Rights Day.

Started in 1991, the Women’s Global Leadership Institute. It’s used as an organizing strategy by individuals and organizations around the world to call for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls.

Among many actions that showcased advocacy efforts, this year’s campaign called on governments worldwide to share how they are investing in gender-based violence prevention.

As we continue to raise awareness and advocate for change, it is important to recognize the collective responsibility we all have in addressing this issue. It is not enough to simply condemn violence against women and girls – we must actively work towards creating a society where such violence is no longer tolerated. This requires action from individuals, communities, and institutions to challenge harmful norms and promote equality and respect for all.

It is not enough to be a bystander, we must actively stand up and speak out against violence and discrimination. Also, we continue to take action to end this pervasive issue, let’s remember to stay optimistic and hopeful that change is possible.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the magnitude of the problem, but every small action we take towards creating a safer world for women and girls makes a difference.

Whether it’s educating ourselves and others, speaking out against injustice, or supporting organizations working to support survivors, our efforts are not in vain.

Let’s keep the momentum going and continue to advocate for a world where every woman and girl can live free from fear and violence. Together, we can create a future where equality and safety are the norm.

Let’s keep the conversation going and work towards a brighter, safer future for women and girls everywhere. Together, we can make a difference.

It’s important to remember that this fight doesn’t end after these 16 days – it’s an ongoing battle that requires continuous effort and dedication.

Let us also take this time to reflect on the progress we’ve made and the work that still needs to be done. It’s crucial to stand in solidarity with women and girls who have experienced violence, and to actively work towards creating safer and more inclusive communities for everyone.

Let us use our voices and platforms to amplify the message that violence against women and girls is never acceptable. Together, we can make a difference and create a world where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.

Though the 16 days of activism against violence towards women and girls has gone, let’s continue to stand up, speak out, and advocate for change.

We must work together to create a world where every woman and girl can live free from all forms of violence.

It’s on all of us to make this a reality. Empowering women and ensuring gender equality is not just a goal but a necessity for a better world. When women are empowered and treated equally, not only do they thrive, but the entire community benefits.

We need to continue to work towards creating a world where women and girls have equal opportunities and where their voices are heard and valued. This means providing access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, as well as ensuring that they are protected from violence and discrimination.

Again, let’s continue to stand up for women’s rights and work towards a future where all women and girls can live free from violence and fear. Together, we can create a world where empowerment and equality are the norm, not the exception.

Globally, 10.3 percent of women live in extreme poverty today, according to the report presented by the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General to the the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), and progress towards ending poverty needs to be 26 times faster to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

During the 68th session of the CSW68, the largest UN gathering on gender equality, which recently held in New York for two weeks to discuss progress, identify challenges, set policies and also set global standards on gender equality and the rights of women and girls, there was robust commitments by UN Member States to strengthen financing and institutions to eradicate women’s and girls’ poverty.

During the session, the Commission also adopted a resolution on HIV-AIDS led by the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC), which calls to increase investment in gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls in the HIV-AIDS response.

The outcome document (or Agreed Conclusions) recognizes that women and girls living in poverty become ‘shock absorbers’ in times of crisis, and that further efforts are needed to increase resources to address women’s and girls’ poverty.

Acknowledging that the international financial architecture is not fit for a crisis-prone world, the Commission called for reforms to enable countries to mobilize and invest resources in gender equality.

These measures include debt relief and progressive taxation and ensuring that public resources are allocated to address the needs and rights of women and girls.

The agreed conclusions also recommend mobilizing financial resources from public and private sources, strengthening the international financial architecture, ensuring a gender lens in national budgeting processes, and preventing regressive taxation that disproportionately impacts women and girls with low or no income.

The outcome document also notes that official development assistance must be increased to address women’s and girls’ poverty. The share of total aid with gender equality as a policy objective decreased for the first time in a decade from 45 in 2019 to 43 per cent in 2020, per the latest data of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

The commission also called for the implementation of gender-responsive economic and social policies, including increased women’s representation, leadership and participation in economic institutions, enforcing core labour standards to ensure equal pay for work of equal value, and implementing policies to support women-owned businesses.

Engaging and financing women’s organizations is another key recommendation. Robust, flexible and multi-year financing for locally led feminist movements and women’s rights organizations is critical to address poverty, as proven by existing mechanisms such as the UN Trust Fund to End Violence Against Women and the Women’s Peace and Humanitarian Fund.

The agreed conclusions also called for strengthening national capacities to collect and use disaggregated data on multidimensional poverty, and to adopt new development strategies towards sustainable economies.

These include strengthening inclusive and gender-responsive social protection systems and scaling up investment in the care economy to reduce women’s time and income poverty and expand their employment opportunities.

On the sidelines of CSW68, approximately 270 side events were organized by UN member states, intergovernmental organizations and UN entities, and more than 760 parallel events were organized by civil society and youth-led organizations as part of the NGO CSW68 Forum.

The participation of young people, including adolescent girls, across the various CSW sessions, including the Youth Forum, enabled youth delegates to exchange experiences, knowledge, lessons learned and good practices with an emphasis on the multiple dimensions of inequality which exacerbate how young women and girls experience poverty.

Attention is now turning to next year’s 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Beijing Platform for Action. The 69th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69) will take place from 10 to 21 March 2025 in New York.

Speaking at the program on Saturday 6th August in Adavi, Dr Jumai Ahmadu, the Founder of the Foundation, said the loan is a Non-Profit Revolving Loan Scheme (NPLRS), introduced in 2018 to encourage women-ked businesses.

Dr Ahmadu, who was represented by Comrade Salawu Omeiza, said the initiative was to empower vulnerable women and widows to become self-reliant and sustain their families.

The founder stressed the NPLRS was designed to support widows and under-privilege women to start profitable businesses with a small interest free payable at intervals.

According to her, the intending beneficiaries would form clusters consisting 20 to 40 women each where they are given a certain amount of money to startup or boost their existing businesses.

“These women are expected to pay back these loans in installments which will be given to other woman to start their own businesses.

“The aim of the scheme is to creat a community of self-reliant women who will add value to themselves and their immediate community, though inclusion and circulation of startup funds”, she said.

She noted that scheme had recorded over 1000 beneficiaries in the pilot States which include FCT and Nasarrawa

She encouraged the beneficiaries to use the loan judiciously, and be committed to paying back the loan so that others could benefit.

Each of the 40 beneficiaries in four clusters received a sum of N20, 000, while the remaining 40 women in the clusters would benefit subsequently.

Mrs Bose Isah, Okunchi community cluster leader , who spoke on behalf of the beneficiaries, thanked the foundations for the gesture.

Mrs Bose said that the gesture would go a long way to help the beneficiaries to establish and boost their petty trades to be self-reliant and reduce poverty among women.

Hajia Rekiya Fatche who spoke on behalf of RTA Foundation appreciated the kind gesture and prayed to God to bless the Founders of the Foundations.
